Waking up at three in the morning soaked in sweat, or just as often shivering and cold. For many people this isn't the exception but a pattern. And the cause is more often in your bedding than you'd think.
Not every type of bedding is made to move with your body temperature. Some materials trap heat while you're already overheated. Others release heat so quickly that you wake up cold in winter.
In this article we explain how temperature regulation in bedding works, which materials perform well, and when switching your bedding genuinely makes a difference.
Why does your temperature fluctuate at night?
Your body regulates its temperature continuously, even when you sleep. During deep sleep, your core temperature drops slightly, which is normal and necessary for a good night's rest. Your body then releases heat through your skin.
If your bedding can't carry that heat away, it builds up. You start to sweat, your sleep becomes restless and you wake up. The other way round: bedding that holds no warmth at all can cause you to cool down too quickly in winter.
What does temperature-regulating bedding do?
Bedding can't actively adjust your body temperature, only your body itself can do that. What good bedding can do is support your body in the process:
- Draw heat and moisture away when you overheat
- Offer enough insulation when it's cooler
The result: fewer moments when you wake up because the bed is too warm or too cold.
Which materials work best?
Tencel™ Lyocell
Tencel™ is known for its excellent moisture absorption and releases that moisture back into the air quickly, keeping your bed and skin drier. That makes it a popular choice for people who perspire easily during the night.
SJUMO's Tencel™ Sateen collection combines this with a soft, silky feel.
Microfibre (high quality)
High-quality microfibre, like SJUMO's Silky Smooth, is designed to let air circulate and draw moisture away, which keeps it breathable and quick to dry. Note: budget microfibre with a very tight or heavy weave can trap heat instead, so the right quality is essential here.
Organic Cotton
Organic cotton breathes well and is free from chemical treatments. SJUMO's Organic Cotton collection is GOTS-certified (CU-1003204). Cotton holds moisture slightly longer than Tencel™ or microfibre, but with good ventilation it's a pleasant, natural alternative for all seasons.
Two people, one bed
He's too warm, she's too cold, or the other way round. A classic problem. Breathable bedding already helps a great deal, but the most practical solution is using two separate duvets in one bed. In Scandinavian countries that's the standard, and not without reason, it works.
What does SJUMO offer?
The Silky Smooth collection (microfibre) is designed to let air circulate and is suitable for all seasons. The Tencel™ Sateen collection offers extra moisture management, ideal if you perspire easily. And the Organic Cotton collection is for those who prefer a pure, natural material. All collections are OEKO-TEX certified.
