How often should you wash your bedding? (And at what temperature)

How often should you wash your bedding? (And at what temperature)

Keep your bedding fresh, soft and hygienic for longer.

We understand you can't wait to slip into your new SJUMO bedding, but we recommend washing it once first. Below you'll find exactly how often to wash your bedding, at what temperature for each fabric, and how to keep it fresh for as long as possible.

How often should you wash your bedding?
Ideally, change your bedding once a week. While you sleep you lose, on average, half a litre to a good litre of moisture per night, and even more on warm nights. Over a week that moisture builds up, along with the bacteria and dead skin cells you leave behind. Washing regularly creates a more hygienic, more comfortable sleep environment, and with it a better night's sleep.

Two rules of thumb that also keep your bedding looking better:

  • Wash with similar colours to keep the colours vivid.
  • Take it out of the machine right after washing for a fresh scent and fewer wrinkles.

At what temperature should you wash your bedding?

That depends on the fabric. Below are the washing instructions for each SJUMO collection.

Silky Smooth (recycled microfibre)

  • Wash at 40°C with a mild detergent, no bleach. 60°C is fine too.
  • Don't use fabric softener, to preserve the smooth texture of the fabric.
  • Air drying is the most sustainable option, but a short cycle on low heat in the dryer works too. Bonus: the fabric dries quickly.
  • The fabric is wrinkle-free, so ironing isn't needed.

Tencel™ Sateen (natural eucalyptus fibre)

  • Wash at 30°C with a mild detergent, no bleach.
  • Don't use fabric softener.
  • Turn it inside out and wash it together with soft fabrics.
  • Air drying is the most sustainable option and the kindest to the fibre. Tencel™ dries quickly by nature.
  • Ironing? Only on the inside, at a low temperature.

Good to know: Tencel™ is a 100% natural and delicate material. That's what makes it feel exceptionally soft, but it also makes it more prone to creasing and friction than our Silky Smooth. The subtle natural sheen may fade a little over time, but the comfort stays.

Organic Cotton (300TC GOTS-certified cotton sateen)

  • Wash at 40°C with a mild detergent, no bleach. 60°C is fine too.
  • Don't use fabric softener: organic cotton becomes softer with every wash, and fabric softener reduces its moisture-absorbing ability.
  • Air dry, or a short cycle on low heat in the dryer.
  • Iron inside out on low heat for a crisp, hotel-worthy look, or leave it for a relaxed feel.

How often should you wash your pillowcase?

It's best to change your pillowcase at least once a week, and ideally more often than the rest of your bedding. After all, your face rests on it every night, so it picks up skin oils, sweat and bacteria more quickly. Do you sometimes go to bed with make-up on, or have skin that flares up easily? Then wash your pillowcase more often. Washing your face before bed helps keep your pillowcases fresh for longer.

The biggest benefits of SJUMO

The biggest benefits of SJUMO bedding lie in the comfort of every night. First of all, it's ultra-soft and feels pleasant against your skin straight away, wash after wash.

It's also quick-drying: hang it up after washing and you'll have your bed made up fresh again in no time, with no long wait and minimal creasing.

And perhaps most important of all: SJUMO bedding is hypoallergenic and therefore gentle on sensitive skin. Because the fabric absorbs moisture well and bacteria don't cling easily to the fibres, bacteria get little chance and your bedding feels fresh for longer, as if it's just been washed.
