An alarm going off at 7am: not exactly cause for celebration. These five habits make getting up noticeably easier.
Some people spring out of bed, whistling. The rest of us need a little more help, especially during the darker months. The good news: with a few simple changes to your evening and morning, waking up becomes a lot more bearable.
1. Build a consistent rhythm
It might sound dull, but a consistent sleep rhythm is the key to waking up feeling rested. Go to bed and get up at roughly the same time every day, weekends included. Keep this up for a while, and eventually you'll start waking up naturally, before your alarm even goes off.
2. Keep your phone out of reach
For the dedicated snoozers among us, this might be the toughest tip, but it works. Don't leave your phone on your nightstand; put it somewhere further across the room instead. That way, you have to get up to switch it off. Repeatedly dozing off again after hitting snooze fragments your sleep, leaving you less sharp and less energetic during the day.
3. Turn your evening into a ritual
What you do right before bed largely determines how you wake up the next morning. Swap that last scrolling session for something calming, like reading. Caffeine within six hours of bedtime, alcohol and too many daytime naps all work against a good night's sleep too.
4. Seek out daylight in the morning
Daylight is one of the most powerful signals for your internal clock. So open the curtains the moment you wake up, or step outside for some fresh air. During the winter months, when the sun barely shows itself, a wake-up light can be a great alternative.
5. Eat well and move enough
Food and exercise influence your energy levels more than you might think. Nutritious food gives you fuel, while heavily processed food tends to leave you sluggish. Combine that with regular movement, and your daytime tiredness noticeably decreases.
One more tip that's often underestimated: how your bed feels when you climb in affects how easily you climb out the next morning. A cosy, soft bed turns your evening ritual into a genuine moment of calm and helps you unwind faster, exactly what our Silky Smooth collection was designed for.
