You're tired. Bone-tired. And yet there you lie: turning over, flipping the pillow, watching the clock. Sleeping badly can feel so unfair, just when you need rest most, your body lets you down.
The good news? Sleep is no mystery. Usually a handful of very concrete causes sit behind all that tossing and turning. Here are the seven most common, including one hardly anyone thinks of, but that affects you every single night.
1. Too much (blue) light in the evening
As soon as it gets dark, your body starts producing melatonin, the hormone that makes you sleepy. Bright light, and especially the blue light from screens, puts that production on pause and tells your brain it's still daytime.
In the last hour before bed, dim the lights and put your phone away. You don't have to sit in the dark, warm, low light is enough to signal to your body that the night has begun.
2. You're sleeping too hot
To fall asleep, your body needs to cool by a degree. Your core temperature dips slightly, and that's quite literally the starting signal for sleep. If your bed holds on to that warmth, you stay stuck in that annoying 'just a bit too warm', which makes it harder to drift off.
Recognise sliding a leg out from under the duvet to cool down? Then your bedding is probably the culprit. Breathable, cooling fabrics let warmth escape instead of trapping it around you, so you cool down the way you're meant to.
3. Your sleep rhythm isn't consistent
Your body loves rhythm. Go to bed at ten one night and at twelve the next, and your internal clock keeps guessing when it's time to wind down, leaving you wide awake in bed.
Choose a fixed time to sleep and wake, and stick to it as much as you can, weekends included. Boring? Perhaps. But your body rewards you with falling asleep faster and sleeping more deeply.
4. Your bedding doesn't breathe
Every night you give off moisture, even if you don't consider yourself a sweaty sleeper. If your bedding doesn't breathe, that moisture lingers in the small space between you and your duvet. The result: a clammy, sticky bed that keeps waking you just a little, over and over.
Fabric that draws moisture away and releases it keeps that layer around you dry and fresh.
5. Coffee or alcohol at the wrong time
Caffeine stays in your system far longer than you'd think: that four o'clock cup is still half-active by bedtime. And while a glass of wine makes you drowsy, alcohol fragments your sleep in the second half of the night and nibbles away at your deep, restorative stages.
Keep caffeine for the morning and go lighter in the evening. You'll notice the difference straight away in how you wake up.
6. A mind that stays 'on'
Worrying, to-do lists, living tomorrow in advance… A busy mind keeps your body in the 'on' position, with stress hormones working against sleep. You're tired, but your system is still on high alert.
Build a small evening ritual: write your thoughts out of your head, breathe slowly for a few minutes, do something screen-free. That's how you give your mind permission to let go.
7. Irritating fabric and hidden allergens
Rough, scratchy fabric and built-up allergens such as dust mites can subtly irritate your skin and airways all night long, with tiny awakenings you won't even consciously remember in the morning, but that you certainly feel. Soft, smooth, hypoallergenic bedding helps here.
The good news: much of this is within reach
Look at that list again. Dimming the lights, getting your rhythm back, keeping the evening calmer, you can start all of that tonight. And the foundation you lie in every single night, your bedding, deserves just as much attention.
